Frequently asked questions
Clear answers to common insurance questions
These general explanations can help you prepare for a conversation. Your policy language and circumstances control actual coverage.
Does my auto insurance cover rental cars?
Your personal auto policy may extend coverage when you drive a permitted vehicle, including some rental cars, but terms and exclusions vary. Rental-company coverage may protect the rental and can help keep a loss from being handled under your personal policy. Review your policy and the rental agreement with Jeff before relying on either option.
Why do I need renters insurance?
Renters insurance can provide liability protection and cover personal belongings after a covered loss. Auto insurance generally covers the vehicle, not belongings inside it. Coverage away from home, limits, deductibles and exclusions vary by policy and state.
What is the difference between liability only and full coverage?
Liability coverage generally addresses covered injury or damage you cause to others. “Full coverage” is an informal term often used for a combination of liability plus physical-damage coverages such as collision and comprehensive. It does not mean every possible loss is covered.
What is a business owners policy (BOP)?
A BOP combines common property and liability coverages in one policy for eligible businesses. A commercial package policy can combine or separate a broader set of coverages based on the business and carrier.
What is the difference between general liability and professional liability?
General liability generally addresses covered third-party bodily injury or property damage. Professional liability generally addresses covered claims related to professional services, errors or omissions. The correct combination depends on the work performed and the policy wording.
What does inland marine insurance cover?
Despite its name, inland marine insurance generally protects certain property, materials or equipment while in transit over land, temporarily stored away from the primary location, or moving between job sites. Coverage varies by policy and may be important for contractors, equipment owners and businesses that transport valuable property.
What is an insurance deductible?
A deductible is the amount the policyholder is responsible for paying toward a covered loss before the insurer pays the remaining eligible amount. Deductibles can differ by coverage and cause of loss, so compare both the premium and the amount you would need to pay after a claim.
What is umbrella insurance?
Umbrella insurance can provide additional liability protection above the limits of qualifying underlying policies and may cover certain liability situations not covered by those policies. It generally does not replace coverage for damage to your own home or vehicle.
Is flood damage covered by homeowners insurance?
Standard homeowners policies generally do not cover flooding. Flood insurance is normally purchased separately, and waiting periods may apply before coverage takes effect. Ask Jeff about the available flood insurance company and confirm the policy terms before you need the coverage.
How often should I review my insurance coverage?
Review coverage at least annually and whenever something meaningful changes—such as buying property or a vehicle, renovating a home, adding a driver, starting or expanding a business, hiring employees, acquiring equipment or changing how property is used.
What is the difference between direct and brokered company access?
Direct access means Jeff works with the insurance company through a direct appointment. Brokered access means he accesses the insurance company through an authorized intermediary. Either path may provide an appropriate option; eligibility, terms, service and state availability still need to be confirmed.
